Traditional Chettiar Hindu Wedding | Shankarvel & Shamala

  • Date : 26&27-01-2015
  • Wedding : AyiraVaisyar Sri Meenakshi Sundraeswarar Temple, Penang, Malaysia
  • Dinner : Moral Uplifting Society Hall, Penang, Malaysia
  • Package : Cinematic Style (Option A)
  • Song :  Koodamela Koodavachi Koodal Uru Poravale Rummy
  • Genre : Wedding Highlights

This sweet couple, Shankarvel and Shamala Deviwere arranged to meet each other by their parents in a temple in December 2014, and within a glimpse of an eye, wedding bells rang their way. This simple and yet memorable traditional chettiar wedding was held on 26 January 2015 at AyiraVaisyar Sri MeenakshiSundraeswarar Temple in Penang. The day itself was so special to the couple as well as another loving couple, the parents of the groom, as it marks their 37th wedding anniversary!

We call it a memorable one because of the uniqueness we noticed in this ceremony, the rituals which were originated from Tiruppattur, Thenmapattu, Tamil Nadu of South India. It all began from the welcoming ceremony of the groom. While the bride was eagerly waiting in the wedding temple, the groom made his way slowly from Arulmigu Sree Ganeshar temple Waterfall by car while all his relatives accompanied him by foot. The auspicious traditional Indian music instrument ‘melam’ and ‘nathaswaram’ were also seen adding spice to the procession. The Groom was served with a simple breakfast by his in-laws to be before he departed from Ganeshar temple.

Originally as per their tradition in Tiruppattur, the wedding ceremony is usually hosted by the bride. As such, this welcoming ceremony was initiated by the bride’s family to show respect and to extend a warm welcome to the groom and his family. This ritual has then became a practice of their tradition. At this point of departure also, we noticed that the sister of the groom was proudly holding a basket called ‘polapotti’ wrapped in a ‘vesthi’. As per their practice, ‘thali’ and the wedding saree of the bride is placed inside the basket that is to be carried along together with the groom during the procession.

The event also caught our attention as various games were organised between the couple after the ‘thali’ tying ceremony. The ‘congkak’ game, rolling of coconut from one end to another end, placing a cute doll in baby cloth cradle and taking turns to carry the doll (which symbolisesto carry a baby soon) were all very interesting, new and unique to us. In arranged marriages, these games were initially introduced just to have an ice breaking session between the husband and wife. The bride also serves her husband with rice to assure of her responsibility as a wife.

The loud music instrument ‘melam’ and ‘nathaswaram’ was heard again, and this time it wasn’t the bride nor the groom but it was the uncles of the groom marching in happily with their entire family members carrying ‘hantaran’ called ‘maaman seer’. At this moment of joy, all of them were seen bowing to the elder’s one after another to obtain blessing, a mark of respect and itis found in any Indian culture.

Besides the buffet serving, this wedding ceremony as well as the people highly prioritise banana leaf serving as a matter of appreciation and providing excellent hospitality to all the guests who were present. Everything in here was just very traditional and authentic!

Here’s a bit about their story ….
We’ve known each other since forever. We started off as rivals during our younger years to becoming the best of friends later on in life. It has been a long and beautiful journey knowing one another, sharing every joy and sorrow till one day we realized, we can’t live without each other. That moment on, we knew we were in love.
The rest is history.
We decided to have our R.O.M. on the 29th of December as it is a very significant date for both of us. Our anniversary. We had a small and simple ceremony with people closest to our hearts. We are very grateful to everyone who came to share our happiness with us. We will definitely cherish every single moment of the event for the rest of our lives.
